Is it difficult to keep salad fresh in the fridge? Here’s how to make salad last for longer. Read the latest news!

If you love fresh salad, you will certainly have experienced the bitter frustration of having to throw away a dried up or rotting product.

We have all been there. After all, salad is the most delicate vegetable ever and requires a little more attention to keep it crispy and tasty in the refrigerator.

But don’t worry: just a few simple steps, and you will be able to make your salad last longer and enjoy every single bite! Don’t let your commitment to purchasing fresh and genuine ingredients go to waste.

The importance of correct preservation

Correct storage of salad not only keeps the product fresh, but also preserves the nutritional properties.

If stored properly and a correct and consistent cold chain is guaranteed, salad can last longer in the fridge, especially if stored in an airtight container with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture.

However, salad dishes that have already been prepared with perishable ingredients or dressings, such as mayonnaise, can deteriorate much faster, usually within 1 to 2 days.

Here’s how to store salad to make it last longer.

6 tips on how to make salad last longer

Now that you know how important it is to store your salad properly to keep it fresh and nutritious, let’s run through some simple steps to make it last longer.

By following these six tips, you can avoid wasting produce and enjoy a crispy and tasty salad even after several days in the fridge.

1. Remove the outer leaves

To store salad, start by removing the first layer of outer leaves. These are the leaves most exposed to dust and bacteria, so eliminating them preserves the inner leaves from contamination.

2. Wash the salad carefully

Wash the salad thoroughly before consumption: rinse well under cold running water for about 3 minutes; this only applies to unwashed products, and is not required if the salad is pre-washed and comes in a bag or tray.

3. Dry the leaves

After washing, drain and dry the salad leaves carefully. Use a juicer or clean cloth to remove moisture, as excess water can rot vegetables.

4. Use an airtight container

Store the salad in an airtight glass container, adding a sheet of kitchen roll inside to absorb any residual water. If you don’t have an airtight container, you can also wrap the leaves in a kitchen tea towel.

5. Store in a fridge

Storing salads in the fridge is essential in order to keep it fresh and crisp. In fact, low temperatures decelerate the growth of bacteria and the consequent decomposition of vegetables, keeping the leaves healthy for longer.

6. Cut only when needed

Avoid cutting the salad in advance: keep it intact until ready to serve to preserve the texture and flavour for longer. When the leaves are cut, this increases the surface area exposed to air, which accelerates oxidation and loss of nutrients.

Beware of pre-dressed salads

Bear in mind that salad dressings decrease the time that vegetables stay fresh in the fridge.

In general, salads should be eaten immediately after adding the dressing to prevent them from becoming limp.
